A slate bed snooker table is quite simply a snooker table that has a cloth covered slate playing surface. The slate is much the best surface to play any of the billiards games on as it can be made perfectly flat and is quite literately rock hard, so won't break or wear out in a hurry. Indeed snooker tables are passed down or left in a house as they never wear out, apart from the cloth perhaps from time to time. The slate itself is very heavy and the thickness of the slate on a snooker table is typically 1 to 1 ½ inches sometimes more especially on the older tables, which is a very substantial piece of rock and weighs a fair bit. A full size table can literally weigh in at 1 ton or roughly 1000 kgs.
To enable the slate to be put onto the table, the frame of the tables is necessarily heavy to have the strength to carry all this weight. The slate itself comes in multiple parts, typically 5 pieces for a full size table. These are butted together during the install and this is a critical process, which is why it is best to get the table installed professionally and let them figure out how to get the seamless joints required so the ball rolls smoothly across the table. The larger pool tables also have multiple slate pieces, especially the larger American pool tables.
Bed Frame Leg
The weight of the table is also the reason the table has so many legs. A full size table has 8 legs, sometimes more to spread the load. It has been compared to having 2 men per leg or having 16 men in the room. However the legs spread the load so well that you can put your snooker table on standard floorboards with no extra strengthening required. If you are serious about playing snooker or just want the best playing experience, make sure you get a slate bed snooker table.
