Buying or building a new home can be a large expense. You finally have the home of your dreams, and you might find yourself short on the funds to furnish it. With a little work, you can rejuvenate the furniture you have or redo cheap thrift store finds to create a decorator feel.
The most important thing to consider in older furniture is its condition. Friends will not remember how beautiful the Dutch colonial house plans of your home are if the chairs break when they sit down. A chest of drawers might have a great look, but it will be useless to you if the drawers stick. Some issues can be easily repaired. Before you begin, you might want to consult an expert to make sure the item you are altering is merely old and not an antique since refinishing can ruin an items value. If the item is wood, you will need to decide if you want to paint or stain it. Painted furniture allows for more creativity, but many people prefer the look of real wood grain. Start by removing or covering any hardware. You can remove the older finish either by sanding or by using a chemical paint stripper. Either choice is best done in a well-ventilated area. Once the item is stripped, you can apply whatever paint or stain you have chosen. The more artistic might want to paint words or decorative elements on a piece. You can also create interesting looks with the use of other elements. A water-stained coffee table becomes a show piece when you cover the top with a mosaic of tiles. A chest of drawers really pops when you wallpaper the drawer-fronts and paint the rest of the piece. Replacing existing hardware can enhance the look of the piece, too.
Upholstered furniture can be a little harder to fix up. The couch that looked great in your old home might look shabby in your new home built with a luxury house floor plan. If both the frame and the padding of the piece are in good shape, you can find a large variety of slipcovers to go over a piece. Generally, the more tightly fitted a slipcover is, the better it looks. If you can sew, you can make a slipcover or tailor a bought one to closely fit your piece. If the padding has gone bad, you might consider have the piece redone by a professional upholsterer.
