To get rid of bed bugs you first of all need to know you have them. So first let's recap on the signs.

First of all you wake up with itchy red marks and wonder where they come from. Often, they will be in a straight line along your arm or leg. This is where the bed bug has followed your vein as it feeds. The bug can detect you from it's hiding place and feed on your blood, taking up to three times it's own body weight. In some cases you can be bitten up to 500 times per night!

First of all it will give you an aesthetic to stop you from waking up, and then it will inject you with an anti-coagulant so your blood flows freely. Nice huh?

The bed bugs are very small and are reddish brown in colour, although the young can be pale and almost transparent. This makes them very difficult to see especially as they are so small. They are redder when they are full of your blood.

So apart form the red itchy bites, what are the other signs? It is unlikely that you will find a bed bug walking around unless you have the misfortune to be awake when they are crawling over your body or in your hair. The reason for this is they are very flat and can hide in very small crevices. Even professional pest control experts will often dismantle a bed to make sure they have got rid of all of the bed bugs. The smallest crack or join in a bed frame can be their home.

One of the most common signs of their existence is their excrement, which shows as small black dots. Often these will be grouped around a particular area. This may be near their home.

So to get rid of a bed bug infestation isn't always easy or cheap if you use a professional. Even then the results aren't guaranteed.

First of all the bed is the most likely place to be infected. Dismantle the bed and you may find some live ones crawling around after being disturbed. A good method is to use a steam cleaner to clean all areas.

Make sure you wash all bed linen and inspect all crevices around the mattress. You can steam most mattresses, just make sure you let it dry.

I would then recommend spraying all bed parts before you put it back together with an insecticide. Wal-Mart sell a bed bug powder you can use - but you need to clean everything first.

Once the bed has been dealt with you need to turn your attention to any where near the bed. A common bed bug hiding place is in electrical outlets. Spray these as well but do not get liquid into the actual outlet as this can be dangerous.

My top tip is to use cello tape to seal us any cracks, joins or crevices when you put the bed back together. Also use it to seal any unused electrical outlets. A bed bug can live for a year without a feed so be sure to leave the tape there for at least that long.

Of course, many people will just want to dispose of the bed, carpet and redecorate - but this is obviously costly.

While regular exercise is a necessity, a properly exercised Borzoi will be a calm and placid animal perfectly contented to curling up on a bed or sofa to relax. Be sure that you keep your bed and box spring away from the wall as bed bugs have been known to live on walls or baseboards. Bed mites are wingless creatures so they can only get into your bed by climbing things like your box spring or headboard. Over the years I've heard it many times. We need a new mattress as we're sleeping on the floor. My first thought is always surely a sofa or a tub with lots of blankets in it might be preferable to the hard, cold, drafty nature of the floor. I'm sure this statement is simply an illustration to the fact that the mattress needs to go. So how do we know when we need a new mattress?

Often our mattress may not be getting proper support. So what is proper support? If you own a mattress/box spring combination this unit should be resting on a steel or wood frame with at least 2-3 cross supports beneath this set. The cross supports should make use of support legs or supports beneath that touch the ground. This will help ensure that your mattress is supported. If you're using a mattress on a platform bed you'll want to make sure the bed's foundation meets the manufacturer's warranty. Standard mattresses will work fine on beds that use ten slats or more. These beds may have partial center support and that will include middle support legs to help with support.

Perhaps your mattress is supported correctly as mentioned but shows dips or valleys. Is there something beneath the mattress that is causing this? If this hasn't been occurring that can also cause body impressions faster in your mattress than if your mattress is being flipped and rotated often.

Of course guest room mattresses and everyday use mattresses vary in terms of their wear and this will affect the longevity of your mattress as well as when to replace it.

Another thing to take into consideration is how you feel in the morning. Do you wake up with a sore back? Do you have aches or pains in the morning? How you feel after a night's sleep is in direct relation to what your mattress is providing in support. Often a sore back in the morning can be attributed to your mattress. If you are experiencing back issues you should schedule an appointment with your physician to make sure any issues you are having aren't related to something other than your health.

So when does sleeping on your mattress compare to sleeping on the floor? I can't think of anything more uncomfortable than the floor for sleeping. When you're at the point when the floor seems to be a better choice for a good night's sleep then the time has come to replace your mattress. So what are the signs to look for to determine if you need a new mattress?

Look for dips or valleys in your mattress. Determine if these are from natural body impressions or if the support for your mattress may be causing these. If the mattress isn't receiving proper support correcting it so it does may eliminate the need to immediately replace the mattress. If the mattress has proper support but still shows impressions than it may be ready to be replaced. How long the mattress has been used can also determine when you'll need to replace it. Generally anywhere from ten to fifteen years is an average mattress lifespan. If you've owned your mattress for this amount of time and it's becoming uncomfortable than you may be ready for a new mattress for your bed.

Beds are funny things. We find comfort from them for sleeping and yet they can become uncomfortable to us over time. Making sure our mattress and foundation are working properly is important not only for our backs and bodies in getting a good night's sleep but our health as well. So if you're considering sleeping on the floor and you currently own a mattress then the time has come to find that new mattress. You deserve better than that cold drafty floor and your body will thank you for it.

Hip fractures are an extremely common occurrence in elderly populations and have significant negative consequences for the individual and the society looking after them. Younger people do fracture the neck of the femur but it is in elderly people with a degree of osteoporosis that the overwhelming number of these injuries occur. For the materials you use for the frame, I strongly suggest something that is not very heavy but is sturdy enough to support the drapes.

Well, at least the "ugly" always stands out, so it can easily be avoided, but when shopping for quality furnishings, it can be challenging to differentiate the good from the bad by visual assessment alone. You will frequently need to rely on the product knowledge of your salesperson, but that creates another issue... How do you know what to ask? Here is a list of 7 key points you'll want to check on:

1. Frame: The fame should be made of kiln-dried hardwood. Removing the moisture prevents warping and cracking over time.

2. Joinery: The corners should be joined using one of two methods:

corner-blocked, and double-dowelled (sometimes called "glued, screwed, and double-dowelled") interlocking tenons3. Legs: Built-in legs are stronger, but removable legs are frequently necessary for delivery purposes. This shouldn't be a big factor in your consideration, unless you plan on seating elephants or parking large machinery on the piece.

4. Springs: The type of spring system your piece has will somewhat depend on the style you are shopping for. Assuming you are looking for a comfy, family room type of sofa, the standard has always been the 8-way, hand-tied spring system, which provides an even, long-lasting distribution of weight. There has been an improvement on this recently, which is 8-way MACHINE-tied, with wire rather than the traditional twine. This eliminates both the inconsistency of human fatigue, as well as the stretching of the twine over time. Either method is great.

5. Cushions: Cushions should be made of high-density, high-resiliency foam, 1.8 or higher. This ensures it will hold up to a long life of ups and downs. The cushion covers should have zippers which allow you to fluff them (especially if you're buying down), or to replace the cores when they wear out.

A note about loose, scatter, and attached back cushions: The term "loose back" does not refer to a bunch of pillows tossed on the back of the sofa. That's called "scatter back." "Scatter back" is the worst type of back for a piece that will be heavily used, especially if you have young children. The pillows wear out, flatten, and generally look terrible in no time. "LOOSE back," on the other hand, refers to full-size cushions, which are tight fitting to the sofa, but not actually attached to the frame. This is the cushion that will give you the greatest longevity, because of your ability to flip and rotate them (which is necessary to get the most life from your piece), although they tend to create a deeper, more relaxed feel when sitting. The problem with semi-attached is that you are NOT able to flip and rotate them, and over time, the fill sinks to the bottom. They do, however, tend to create a more upright style of seating, which is great for those who don't want such a deep expanse. If you go with semi-attached, make sure there is a zipper in the bottom of the cushion, allowing you to have it restuffed when it starts to look droopy.

6. Upholstery: Fabric patterns should be matched (meaning they continue uninterrupted) from the frame, onto the cushions, over the seat, and down the front, as well as over the arms and down the sides. Ideally, the back will be matched also, although if your piece has any curve to the shape, this is not always possible.

7. Leather: When purchasing leather, make sure it is top-grain. This is the uppermost cut of the hide, and the only one with lasting durability. You also want that leather to be vat-dyed. This ensures that the color goes all the way through, which you will greatly appreciate when you get your first, inevitable scratch.
